Asian Art Museum in SF

It has been years but I finally got around to visiting this museum. They reformatted the old library into the new Asian Art Museum in SF.  My nephew is in college and needed to write a paper on some pieces or exhibits on Asian art of his choice, so I volunteered to attend us both here. I have been dragging my feet to get to the museum even though I really wanted to see the visiting exhibit on art from Afghanistan and it is leaving on Sunday! Yeah, I am quite the procrastinator. In fact, if B had not needed to go I am sure I would not have.

It was a really neat exhibit, so if you are going to be in Houston toward the end of Feb, or NY in late June, I would recommend seeing it. And the catalogue book was only $30.00 which I thought a very good deal. They also had an exhibit on Islamic art which was very beautiful and informative. There was a couple of patrons reading out loud from a parchment page of the Koran so I pestered asked them some questions about it since below the black Arabic calligraphy was another type of alphabet written in red ink.  They said it was a Persian translation.  Very neat!  It still looked like Arabic to me, but what do I know.

The rest of the museum is jam packed with all kinds of neat things; I loved the small carved pieces the best...they were made of all kinds of stones, jade being the most common of course.  And if you have a desire to see Buddhas, you will be more than satisfied as there are scores of statues of all sizes and materials.

There is also a link there to the museum's You Tube channel which is worthwhile.

President Barack Obama

Well, like everyone on my flist (because I could not tolerate anyone who thought Palin would be effective) I am sooo happy and relieved that we have this new president.   For all the worry in my own life (though I have it pretty easy)  I feel so proud, optimistic, thrilled, and even scared a bit for the challenges ahead for our country and the world.

However, now I have a leader of MY country to whom I can bestow my respect, faith that he will do the best he can with the team he has assembled, and confidence.   Ye gods, it is so refreshing to hear our president string a proper sentence together from actual words in the dictionary.

Wow, layoffs totally blow.  Yes, my company is cutting back as many others are, hence the layoffs.  I totally did NOT think my department (Sales...HELL-O!  we bring in the money!!!) would be affected, but I was wrong.  It was heartbreaking because two of my coworkers that I work closely with got the chop (with severance, so that's nice) and TD was so upset she was crying.

Fuck, that sucked.  It was very upsetting.  She left but then came back a few hours later to collect some of her stuff, and we comforted her, told her how much we would miss her (even though she'd only been with us 5 mos), and gave her referrals.

We are just hoping that TG doesn't come back with a tommy gun.  You never know! It really is the worst when someone you really liked, valued, and admired gets the boot.  SO UNFAIR.  But TD and I are going to stay in touch, so that is nice.

So 6 mos down the road, let's see where we are again, but I don't want to think about that.  A whole re-org is going on.  What really blows is that I have been there 18 years !  "All my youth!"  Ha ha.

OY VEY!

I'm going to go eat cookies and pull the covers over my head.

Coming late to the comment party...

Happy Birthday to Me!!!

Well, today was a bit of all right....made myself a nice breakfast...got a wonderful LJ gift of flowers from the lovely and altruistic gghost... and then went off to my two hour massage, baybee! Granted part of it was tortuous, but mostly good.  Now if I can just find some prescription opiates to get rid of my cramps, all would be right in the world. ....or a painless hysterectomy, whatever.

And a Happy Birthday to my birthday-mate luna_k !  Hope you had a good one.

Happy 4th to us Yankees!

So much to do and avoiding it all...

Firstly, yet another reason to celebrate the 4th of July, which is really all about parades (which I hate, though I am sorry Ito have missed the parade of 65 Basset Hounds from a dog rescue organizationl; that would have been hilarious), BBQing, and fireworks, but now we another excuse for reveling:  ding dong the witch is dead !  Yeah, Jessie Helms...may you rot, you horrid piece of trash.  Any iota of good that you doubtfully may have achieved in this life has been irrevocably eclipsed by your stunningly appalling and reprehensible actions toward humanity.  Though I do pray you come back as a Mother Teresa-type, to reverse your sins.  Unfortunately, I think you are just the top of the stinkpile.

There, I feel much better.

Sooo, now I am off the make chocolate chip cookies and a custard pie with fruit for tomorrow's belated celebrations!  Then cleaning, shower, pop into clean sheets, and settle back  into my book A Rage to Live: a biography of Richard and Isabel Burton, which I am loving.

Graduation cupcakes and a bonus cake

Did these for my niece, who graduated from high school recently.

More wise owls and hats and cakes, oh my!Collapse )

Walking

Ok, so I'm trying to exercise more, because omg so out of shape it's not even funny.  Orson Welles?  Yeah, we look related. Except for the beard, which I'm working on.  JK.

Today was a loverly day so I took a walk at lunch, a good 20 mins, but that's coz I had to stop a few times and stretch out my lumbar region. It was more of a quick stroll, but I got my heart pumping sufficiently and sweated like Secretariat, which I do more with this added weight.

Wish me luck ... I'm really going to need it.  Trying to also encourage myself to break out the belly dance DVDs I have...those have been fun in the past.

Thank goodness

This might be too much info for some but I am not getting graphic so..... my follow up mammo showed nothing of concern.  I was a little worried but pretty positive in actuality. Now, I'm not sure if that's "It can't happen to ME"  but I didn't really think anything bad would be found.  I would hope that if something were really wrong, my body would tell me, you know? Maybe I do too much 'blind faith' kind of thinking.  Hmmm....

The mail carrier had not treated my Victoria magazine with the proper reverence and respect:  it had a livid tear all thru the pages, so I had bought another one. What?  It was munched! And just not presentable.  And yes, I HAD to buy another one.

That is all...back to work tomorrow....
